Calculator - Poisson Distribution

You can use the calculator below to determine what the occupancy distribution will be for a particular concentration of cells or particles in your starting sample given the size of the microfluidic droplets in which they are being encapsulated.

When encapsulating particles or cells in droplets they are statistically distributed according to the formula named after Siméon Denis Poisson.

You can use the calculator below to determine what the occupancy distribution will be for a particular concentration of cells or particles in your starting sample given the size of the microfluidic droplets in which they are being encapsulated. This can be helpful in optimizing, for example, the number of singly occupied droplets in the final sample.

Note that there are a range of techniques that have been devised to achieve a more consistent distribution, but if no special measures are taken the distribution shown below will closely reflect that achieved.

Calculate the distribution of cells within microfluidic droplets based on Poisson statistics. Enter the cell concentration and the desired droplet diameter.
